Data network shifts to owned fiber-optic lines

Merit Network Inc., a fiber-optic backbone for high-speed Internet transmission, lit its own fiber in southern Michigan in August to connect universities to one another and to outside locations. With the transition, bandwidth capacity quadrupled and promises future cost containment, officials said. Wayne State, Michigan State and the University of Michigan , which are partners in the network, contracted with Merit to run it.
